NEW YORK – MILES McENERY GALLERY is pleased to announce a presentation of new paintings by April Gornik. The exhibition will open 20 February at 525 West 22nd Street and remain on view through 28 March 2020. A public opening reception will be held for the artist on Thursday 20 February from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated publication featuring an essay by Alex Bacon.
April Gornik’s paintings capture ephemeral natural phenomena rendered as luminous landscapes. Transcending the conventional genre, Gornik highlights nature’s transitory and often dreamlike moments. Her works join together and challenge notions of reality and fantasy, naturalism, and surrealism. Through light and its absence, Gornik’s work presents a dynamic, and sometimes disturbing or unsettling representation of the natural world.

Gornik’s paintings possess the exceptional power to evoke tangible memories and emotions. As Gornik explains, “I hope that when people are standing in front of the work they’ll feel their physicality, their temperature, their humidity, their air. They may feel more of less comfortable standing there, delighted, wary, seduced or however else they may react. I want them to invite the complexity I feel about them.”
